Graduate Education Programs

Energy/ Environment/ Economics (E3)

An interdisciplinary specialization spanning 14 Master of Science, Professional Master and Ph.D. engineering programs.  IIT's E3 program was developed to respond to the rapidly changing needs of the energy industry by providing the interdisciplinary research and training required to produce a new breed of engineer -- one who specializes in energy technologies and also understands the associated environmental issues and economic forces that drive technology choice.

Environmental Engineering

Master of Science, Professional Master's and Ph.D. degree programs in Environmental Engineering enable students to build a strong foundation in multiple areas of environmental engineering and to specialize in one area via research and thesis. Areas of specialization include air pollution engineering, chemical engineering, energy/environment/economics (E3), environmental chemistry, environmental resource management, hazardous waste engineering, and water and wastewater engineering.

Power Engineering

IIT’s Master of Power Engineering degree program is designed to prepare students for leading edge positions in industry through the areas of electric power, power electronics, motor drives and electric machines. The Professional Master of Power Engineering is a course-only degree program that prepares students for professional practice in power engineering.

Environmental Management and Sustainability

IIT Stuart School of Business’ Master of Science in Sustainability Management program integrates law, science and business to answer the increasing demand for a uniquely trained management professional who understands the complex dimensions of today's environmental issues.


IIT Stuart's MBA with a Sustainability program concentration prepares students for an understanding of how an organization can develop a competitive advantage while allowing the planet's natural resources to support it indefinitely.

Undergraduate Education Programs

E3 also is available as an undergraduate specialization and requires students to take 15 credit hours in courses from interdisciplinary curricula, including Energy, Environment and Economics (ChE 543), and courses in energy production, conversion, utilization and distribution, energy and environmental systems analysis, and special problems. An undergraduate minor program in Environmental Engineering is also offered (15 credit hours).


IIT's Office of Community Affairs and Outreach Programs is partnering with WISER to conduct community outreach and educational services for the university community and its multiple external constituents. Specifically, OCA will assist WISER faculty in providing and facilitating seminars, community outreach, and educational opportunities that advance public understanding and generate community discourse on energy and environmental issues, problems, concerns, and solutions and options within the surrounding communities.
