Professional Development Mini-Conference 2019

Human Resources and the Organizational Development Office (formerly Continuous Improvement) offered a series of professional development sessions run by professional facilitators from our employee assistance program LifeWorks in September 2019.

Four sessions took place over two days -- two on the Mies campus, and two on the Conviser Law Center. Sessions were grouped together by courses that complement each other. Participation was open to Illinois Tech faculty and staff members.

Outcomes

The Mini-Conference had 96 attendees, with 63 of them being unique attendees. Professional trainers from our employee assistance program LifeWorks facilitated the sessions covering a variety of professional development topics, totalling almost 250 hours invested in training across the attendees over the two days. At least 85% of colleges or divisions were represented at the mini-conference through employee attendance.

Through surveys collected in person, results of the Mini-Conference were overwhelmingly positive, with the large majority agreeing that the session(s) would help them make positive changes in their work or personal lives and that they learned specific strategies that they would recommend the sessions to a colleague. To support application of what participants learned to their jobs, participants wrote letters to themselves that they received about a month after the mini-conference to remind them to apply what they learned. Additional follow-ups and reminders are occuring at a month-and-a-half and two months following the mini-conference to further the impact of the time investment.
