Welcome Week is the IIT community’s chance to welcome you to your new home! All new, incoming undergraduate students are expected to be back on campus by Friday, August 11th to participate in SOAR and Welcome Week Activities.

Have your family members join us after dinner for a chance to meet other families! They will also have a chance to learn about Tech Connect, our family and supporters network, and see where their students will spend Thursday and Friday nights.

The Bud Billiken Parade is an annual parade that proceeds south on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to Washington Park and is followed by activities including a picnic. The 2017 Grand Marshal of the parade is Chance the Rapper!

1 p.m. Fun in the Sun Field Day

Join current and new Illinois Tech students for some fun in the sun! Come hop around on an inflatable play giant Jenga or race a new friend on a pony. 

5 p.m. Bog Hangout 

The Bog bar and grill opens at 5 p.m. The bar will be open, so grab some food and play a round of bowling or our arcade games!

9 p.m. Survey Says

The Bog

Union Board hosts a Survey Says night with prizes in The Bog! Open to all students.

1 p.m. Shopping Shuttles (pick up between MTCC and MSV)

Chartered bus services will take students to Bed Bath & Beyond, where you can stock up on any basic necessities you may have forgotten to bring to campus.

6 p.m. RGL Floor Dinners

Meet on your floor

Meet and socialize with your neighbors over a meal in The Commons. Meet in your residence hall and walk to The Commons together.

7 p.m. Tickling Giants Screening

MTCC Auditorium

Tickling Giants tells the story of Bassem Youssef, the Egyptian Jon Stewart, who decides to leave his job as a heart surgeon and become a late-night comedian. The movie is about how he finds creative, non-violent ways to protect free speech and fight a president who abuses his power. Snacks are provided! RSVP here (suggested, not required!).

Stop by to receive your Civility Coin, which is washed in IIT colors to serve as a reminder of the community standards we are proud to uphold. When you see someone acting in a kind, helpful, engaging, caring, or encouraging way, pass your coin to them!

2 P.M. Self Defense Course with Mixed Martial Arts Club

Join student organization Mixed Martial Arts for a self-defense class! This course will be taught by certified Tang Soo Do instructor, David Paprocki. Both techniques and street smart safety tips will be taught.

3 p.m. Bowling with the Deans

The Bog

Leave no pin standing when you join the deans of your academic colleges to bowl a few games! Snacks will be provided. All other games in The Bog will also be available to play.

6 p.m. Quidditch Match

Gunsaulus Field

Quidditch is the game inspired by Harry Potter, and combines elements of handball, dodgeball, ultimate frisbee, and rugby. Wear your Illinois Tech gear and cheer on your Quidditch team—or play with them!

8 p.m. I <3 Video Games

The Bog

It’s no secret that Illinois Tech students love their video games. Come participate in a Harry Potter game or FIFA tournament, or play some of our retro arcade games!

9 p.m. Outdoor Movie

MTCC South Lawn

Union Board will host the outdoor movie screening of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. We’ll provide the popcorn—you provide the blanket!

1 p.m. Neighborhood Tours with the Black Student Union

Come walk with members of the Black Student Union as we delve into the past of Illinois Tech’s campus and the rich heritage along 35th Street. Learn about the culture, architecture, and beginnings of some of the most prominent sites in Bronzeville.

3 p.m. Becoming a Global Upstander at Illinois Tech

MTCC Pritzker Club

Join Jessica Hulten of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center to explore what being an “upstander” is all about. With our global community at Illinois Tech, learn how to make a difference here and across the world.

Interact with current Self Leadership Academy students in this interaction session, which is all about leadership.

6 p.m. Summer Night with Union Board

MTCC South Lawn

Enjoy one of the last nights of summer with your Illinois Tech family! Bring a blanket and watch the sun set while listening to music and connecting with new friends. Union Board will provide drinks, snacks, and desserts as well as games perfect for a summer night.

7 p.m. Soccer

Stuart Field

Lace up your boots and come out for a pick-up game at Stuart Field.  No playing experience required; just a good attitude and a smile will get you in the gate!  (Please wear athletic attire and gym shoes or soccer cleats.)

7 p.m. Cricket

Rec Field

Come out to the Rec Field, just east of the Keating Sports Center, for a sporting game of cricket!  Bats, wickets, balls, and some knowledgeable cricket folks will be provided. Whether you have been playing for years or are curious to learn about the game, you are welcome to join us.

IIT Tower, Idea Shop ™

The Idea Shop Prototyping Lab is an 8,500-square-foot facility equipped with an assortment of 3D printers, CNC mills, electronics prototyping and testing supplies, and all the general tools students need to fabricate their ideas. Join the lab staff and students for an Escape Room in the shop. Hint: You’ll need to work in teams to solve a series of clues and puzzles!

2 p.m. Is My College Degree Enough to Get a Job?

Hermann Hall Expo

This professional development workshop is tailored to new Illinois Tech students to help begin a future career search. It is designed to allow you to learn and receive feedback on specific career development skills in a variety of areas. This seminar will also show you how to best utilize your new Handshake profile to maximize your opportunities for on- and off-campus jobs!

3 p.m. Navigating Your Health While Away

Center Court

Are you curious about what to do if you need to go to the doctor or receive help of any kind? Do you have general questions about health care, especially health care while you are away from home? This session will give you more insight and knowledge about your health insurance benefits and care.

3 p.m. Safe on Campus Training

Learn about the LGBTQ community and how to be an ally! Participation demonstrates that you do not tolerate anti-LGBTQ violence, harassment, and discrimination and will work toward creating a safe and welcoming space for all students. Advance RSVPs are highly encouraged.

4 p.m. Welcome Back BBQ with the Black Student Union

Relax in the sun at the Black Student Union’s annual BBQ. Come for the food and music, and stay for the party!
