IIT Campus Sustainability PlanAs a world-class institution of higher learning, IIT recognizes the critical importance of the university's mission "to advance knowledge through research and scholarship, to cultivate invention improving the human condition, and to educate students from throughout the world for a life of professional achievement, service to society, and individual fulfillment"– moving our world toward a more sustainable path.

Definition of Sustainability

IIT defines university sustainability as having effective resource management, continuous improvement of processes and reduction of waste and pollutants, toward a goal of zero waste, considering immediate and long-term benefits and consequences, and giving members of the IIT community the tools to improve their resource management in actions associated with their attendance at, or work for, the university.

IIT defines university sustainability as having the following aspects:

  • Effective resource management, in constant pursuit of serving the university's core mission
  • Continuous improvement of processes and reduction of waste and pollutants, pursuing a goal of zero waste
  • Consideration of immediate and long-term benefits and consequences when making long-term decisions
  • Giving members of the IIT community the tools to improve their resource management in actions associated with their attendance at, or work for, the university
