Considered one of the nation’s leading energy experts, Henry R. Linden was known for his research in petrochemical and synthetic fuels processes, including coal gasification. He joined the IIT faculty in 1954 until his death in 2009. Past-president of the Institute of Gas Technology, Linden organized the Gas Research Institute—the United States natural gas industry's cooperative research and development arm—and served as a federal advisor on energy research, development, and policy. Linden was interim president of IIT from 1989–1990 and in 1974 was elected to membership in the National Academy of Engineering.
