Benny Goodman

Honorary LL. D, 1968

Benny GoodmanKnown as the “King of Swing,” Benny Goodman attended Lewis Institute in 1923 as a high school sophomore while also playing the clarinet in a dance hall band. In 1938 he brought his music from the dance floor to international recognition of swing in a historic concert in New York’s Carnegie Hall. The legendary orchestra conductor and jazz musician received an honorary LL.D. degree from IIT in 1968.
